Growing up in Flanders, Belgium, I was surrounded by a culture where people take pride in a strong work ethic. I often saw the negative consequences of this manic fixation on work in which personal relationships would be neglected, resulting in a lack of communication. The irony of doing intensive, physical work to avoid doing emotional work is something I also find myself struggling with, leading me to view the struggle of communication as a Flemish cultural issue. By focusing on two non-communicative characters in my film, I wish to explore the absurdity of how complicated it can feel to do something as simple as talking to a loved one.
