This film explores the central theme of waiting, a paradoxical act which often promises solutions while simultaneously evoking the feeling of helplessness and dislocation.

A big inspiration for my story comes from my grandmother. After the traumatic experience of my grandfather’s passing, she entered into an extended period of waiting where she became reluctant to open herself up to new relationships. For twenty years she waited, holding everyone to an unrealistically high standard of what a perfect partner should be. She eventually made a transformative decision in joining a dating club, accepting imperfection and therefore, reality into her love life.

 

I never met my grandfather but through a series of frequently told stories, I came to know him as the pinnacle of perfection. I saw him through my grandmother’s grieving eyes as the truly ideal partner. To me, there is something so irrational but quintessentially human about the extreme romanticism of someone to the point where their memory cannot be touched or compared to. My grandmother’s act of waiting seemed to me then, bound up with the impossible desire for perfection–a philosophical crux I wish to explore through telling my story.
